After a distinguished 36-year career in law-enforcement, Rick retired in 2020 from his position as Detective with the Washington State Patrol.

As part of a three-generation law enforcement family, he is intimately familiar with the challenges of the First Responder profession. Rick has been confronted with the devastating effects of unaddressed occupational trauma and stress rampant in a culture that admits no weakness and is reluctant to seek outside help. First Responder suicides are increasing each year. Their relationships are failing with a disheartening 85% divorce rate. Many of them are silently suffering from the unaddressed ongoing and unavoidable exposure to traumatic incidents.

Rick cares deeply about his fellow First Responders and feels passionate about providing support services and resilience education to his peers. He is a Certified Field Traumatologist, Compassion Fatigue Educator, and instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). Rick is also a member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and the Green Cross Academy of Traumatology. He and his wife Heike, a Certified Field Traumatologist, now dedicate their extensive experience to helping First Responders mitigate the impact of critical incidents and organizational stress.
